Today, when you think of cinematic superheroes, you think Iron Man, Batman, Black Panther, Super Man, Thor, and many more. But, why are all of these movies only appropriate for adults?
My 4 year old son is obsessed with kid-appropriate toys, such as those made by Imaginext, but sadly, it is completely inappropriate and somewhat illegal(?) for him to see rated R & PG-13 movies about his favorite characters. Why do none of his favorite characters star in kid-appropriate movies??
Iron Man was on TV the other day and my husband was watching the movie. My husband thought it would be fun for my son to see one of his favorite superheroes 'in real life' on TV. It was a very calm part of the movie - Pepper was helping Tony Stark (or Tony Starks, as my son calls him) replace his chest thing (I don't even know what it is called!). Again, it was a very calm moment in the film - Tony way laying on a chair and Pepper was standing by his side. He instructed her to reach into this chest to pull out the old thingy and put it aside, then place the new thingy into its place.
My son watched in complete amazement and eventually burst into tears as he was so completely frightened that someone could reach into a person's body like that. I comforted him and reminded him that they were acting and pretending and it wasn't real. I smiled and hugged my son and of course we changed the channel.
How could something so calm and seemingly simple to an adult upset a small child at the ripe age of 4? My son constantly plays with his hand-held characters (his 'mini guys') and pretends they are fighting with each other or walking around the house, etc. But why when it seems so real does he get scared? Probably because that movie is NOT geared towards kids and yet the Iron Man character is sitting on the floor in his playroom. Something isn't adding up.
Why can't DC & Marvel make kid appropriate superhero movies? They would probably make a lot of money. Seems like a good business opportunity?
